Where Can You Find Container Shelving?

Maximize Your Space with Customized Storage Container Shelving

The top reason shipping containers are purchased is for additional storage. Add custom shelves to get the most out of your shipping container or storage container. They will also help keep your items organized and make the most of the floor space.

Does Your Storage Container Need Organization?

Installing shelving in a shipping container is an excellent way to get better organized because it provides a systematic and efficient approach to managing items while giving visual appeal. Items on shelves are visible and less likely to be misplaced or damaged than those stored on the floor or randomly stacked. Shelving is also typically inexpensive, meaning they’re an affordable organizing solution for most budgets.

Custom Shelving Promotes Safety

Custom shelves can help your employees stay safe by keeping the walking space clear and enabling employees to safely access stored items without the need to bend or lift too far. As well as being practical, this helps to reduce fatigue among workers and decrease the risk of injury in the workplace.

Container Shelving FAQs

It depends on what you’re storing and whether the container is temporary or permanent:

  • Freestanding shelving units are the easiest to install and remove. They’re ideal for rental containers or temporary setups. Look for heavy-duty steel shelving rated for industrial use.
  • Wall-mounted shelving saves floor space and maximizes vertical storage, but it requires anchoring into the container’s structural supports (corrugated steel walls alone are too thin).
  • Adjustable wire shelving allows airflow and reduces condensation under stored items — great for damp or coastal environments.
  • Custom welded shelves are best for permanent setups like workshops, pop-up shops, or tool storage.

Best materials: Galvanized or powder-coated steel, stainless steel, or treated lumber for shelves. Avoid raw wood or cheap metal that can rust or warp in humidity.

Shelving must support the combined weight of stored items plus the weight of the shelf itself.

  • Light-duty shelving: ~250–400 lbs per shelf (good for boxes and tools).
  • Medium-duty: ~600–1,000 lbs per shelf (for parts, bins, or equipment).
  • Heavy-duty: 1,500–2,000+ lbs per shelf (for machinery, drums, or heavy inventory).

Tip:

  • Always load heavier items on the bottom shelves to keep the container stable and reduce tipping risk.
  • Distribute weight evenly along the shelf — containers can flex slightly, especially on uneven ground.

There are three main methods:

  1. Clamp or bolt to existing D-rings / anchor points. Most shipping containers have these along the interior walls and floor — ideal for securing racks without drilling.
  2. Use vertical posts or framing systems. You can create a freestanding structure that braces between the floor and ceiling using adjustable poles or 2×4 framing.
  3. Weld or bolt to structural members. For permanent installations, attach to the container’s vertical ribs or corner posts — never to the thin wall panels alone.

Always ensure the container is level before installation and anchor shelving to prevent shifting during transport or high winds.

If you have any doubt, give us a call and we will install the correct shelving for you.

Think vertically and logically:

  • Use full height: Standard containers are 8’6″ high (High Cubes are 9’6″), so take advantage with 3–4 shelf tiers.
  • Leave walkways: Maintain at least 24″ clearance for access and safety.
  • Zone by frequency: Place frequently used items at eye or waist level.
  • Add corner shelves or small racks near the door for quick-grab tools or supplies.
  • Use bins and labels to keep smaller items organized on larger shelves.

If the container will store both large and small items, mix deep lower shelves (24–30″) with shallow upper ones (12–18″).

Use Case: Recommended Shelving
General storage: Adjustable steel or wire racks
Construction / jobsite: Heavy-duty steel with 2×4 lumber inserts
Workshop / tool storage: Custom welded or bolted steel frames
Retail / pop-up shop: Modular or decorative shelving (often wood or aluminum)
Archive / records: Light-duty wire or steel, 12–16″ depth
Food or climate-controlled storage: NSF-certified stainless steel or coated wire shelving

Yes, shelving typically increases container capacity by 25–50% and saves significant time retrieving items. It also reduces damage and improves airflow — especially valuable for long-term storage or business inventory.

Cost and Value Comparison

  • DIY freestanding racks: $100–$300 per unit (depending on size and load rating).
  • Wall-mounted steel shelving systems: $500–$1,000 installed.
  • Custom welded or built-in shelves: $1,000–$3,000+ depending on materials and labor.

This depends on several factors like the height of the container and the type of shelves. Please contact us and we will be happy to design the shelves you need.
