Custom Shipping Container Flooring Options

Shipping containers are an ideal option for a number of reasons: they’re sturdy, weatherproof, and can be modified to suit a wide range of purposes. But when it comes time to choose a flooring option for your shipping container, which is the best choice? Here are some different options to consider.

Original Shipping Container Flooring

Original flooring refers to the floor that comes included in a new one-trip container. These floors are made of plywood and sometimes bamboo, depending on the manufacturer. Below the wood floor are steel beams that connect to the sidewalls. When the wood is attached it makes the container floor extremely tough and less likely to be dented.

Standard IOS shipping container flooring is 1-1/8-inch-thick marine grade plywood. Our most common one-trip and used shipping containers have these floors to be strong, stable, and water resistant, but may not be suitable for all applications.

Are Pesticides in Shipping Container Flooring Toxic?

Container flooring is treated with a small amount of pesticides to protect the flooring and valuable goods being shipped. Studies have been conducted by the Center for Toxicology and Environmental Health, LLC finding that the pesticides are only toxic to insects and not people. But if you are concerned, we would recommend sealing or replacing the floor.

Alternatives to the Original Plywood Container Flooring

Bamboo is a good alternative to plywood. It looks like a dark shiny stain.

There are many alternative flooring options to choose from. Each with their own benefits. Below are the most used and standard container flooring:

Aluminum or Steel Overlay

Aluminum or steel flooring added on top of the plywood offers the highest level of sustainability over time. It is welded at the seams and to the edges of the container’s steel frame.

Shipping containers with steel or aluminum floors are an excellent choice for those who need a strong and durable floor that can withstand a lot of abuse. There are many industrial applications such as refrigerated containers, toolrooms, and more. They are also resistant to moisture and chemicals.

Aluminum & Steel Features

  • Highly durable surface
  • Easy to clean and maintain
  • Protects against heavy objects
  • Long-term resistance to wear and tear
  • Waterproof, fire resistant and airtight
  • Recyclable
  • Available in smooth or tread steel

Much like steel, aluminum container flooring provides a durable surface that is airtight and waterproof which makes cleaning a breeze. Our Advanced Container Co. experts can install a drain, so you can spray the container down for convenient cleaning.

Epoxy Coating

Epoxy coating can be added as a protective seal to many other existing flooring types. The industrial process seals any chemicals that could be harmful to breathe that could cause long term health risks. It is a superb upgrade for commercial and industrial applications such as toolrooms, garages, offices, workshops, and more.

Epoxy Coating Features

  • Chemical resistance
  • Anti-corrosive
  • Low porosity
  • Waterproofing
  • Slip-resistant surface

Vinyl Flooring

A vinyl floor covering is comprised of a single sheet of vinyl that is rolled out and glued to the pre-existing container floor. It is ideal for use in a variety of different applications and is particularly popular because of its durability in high traffic areas such as container restrooms, toolrooms, and more.

Vinyl Flooring Features

  • Durable and resilient
  • Oil resistant
  • Available in varying colors
  • Easy to clean
  • Resistant oil and water
  • Sound absorbing

Coin Vinyl Flooring

Just like vinyl flooring, coin vinyl is rolled out and adhered to the original wood flooring. It is a popular choice for high-traffic areas such as bathroom containers or garages because it is durable and easy to clean. The coin-shaped pattern on the surface of the vinyl provides good traction, making it less likely to slip. In addition, the vinyl is resistant to stains and scuffs, and can be easily mopped or hosed down for cleaning. It is a relatively affordable option, making it a great value for the money.

Coin Vinyl Flooring Features

  • Durable
  • Non-slip surface
  • Water-resistant
  • Easy to clean
  • Protects against harsh acids, oils, dirt and other dangerous substances

What are Shipping Container Floors Manufactured for?

Shipping container floors are manufactured to be incredibly strong and durable. They need to be able to withstand the forces of shipping and travel, as well as the weight of goods that will be placed on them. Additionally, they are often treated with a water-resistant sealant to keep out moisture and pests.

When Does Container Flooring Need to Be Replaced?

The lifespan of a container flooring system depends on a variety of factors, such as the type of material used, the weight of the cargo, the nature of the loading process, as well as how many ocean trade routes the container traveled and the length of the journeys.

There is no general answer to this question since different types of container flooring will last for different periods of time. However, as a general rule, flooring should be replaced when it starts to show significant signs of wear and tear.

For example, if the surface begins to crack, chip or peel, or if there are large areas of missing coating, then the flooring will need to be replaced. Additionally, if the container is being used for transportation purposes and the flooring becomes wet or slippery as a result, then it needs to be replaced immediately.
